Kaleici, which is Turkish for inner castle, is the nucleus of Antalya, and has embraced many different civilizations during the centuries. It has been restored and the typical double story houses dating from the 19th century with court yards in the back and the narrow streets has become a most attractive tourist centre with its hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment facilities. The Oscar for tourism, the Golden Apple was awarded for the restoration activities in Kaleici. All the original ancient Turkish archaeological characteristics remain, and so have some of the locals. The port's marina has been completely restored and is worthwhile visiting.
